Upington is a town in the Northern Cape province of South Africa, founded in 1873 on the banks of the Orange River. It began as a mission station established in 1871 by Reverend Christiaan Schroder and was first called Olyvenhoutsdrift, for the abundance of olive wood trees in the area, before being renamed for Sir Thomas Upington, Attorney-General and later Prime Minister of the Cape.
