Urgench is a district-level city in western Uzbekistan and capital of Xorazm Region, on the Amu Darya river and the Shavat canal about 450 kilometres west of Bukhara across the Kyzylkum Desert. Its estimated population was 145,000 in 2021, up from 139,100 in 1999.
