Uyo

Uyo is the capital of Akwa Ibom State in the South South region of Nigeria, becoming state capital on 23 September 1987 when Akwa Ibom was created from the former Cross River State. The 2006 census recorded Uyo's population, including Itu, at 427,873, while the greater urban area including Uruan reached 554,906; by 2024 the city's population was put at 1,393,000. Ibibio is the primary indigenous language, and the University of Uyo has its main campus in Nwaniba with satellite campuses on Ikpa Road. The airline Ibom Air is headquartered in the city.
