Vereeniging

Vereeniging is a city in Gauteng province, South Africa, where the Klip River meets a northern loop of the Vaal River. It was established in 1892 after coal was discovered on the Leeuwkuil farm in 1879, and grew into a major industrial center producing iron, steel, pipes, bricks, tiles and processed lime. The city gave its name to the Treaty of Vereeniging, signed there in 1902 to end the Second Boer War. Its 2020 population was about 99,000, and it sits within the Sedibeng district alongside several Eskom power stations that supply the region's goldmines.
