Welkom is a city in the Free State province of South Africa, about 140 kilometres northeast of the provincial capital Bloemfontein. Founded on a farm following gold discoveries and proclaimed a town in 1948, it had a population of 64,130 at the 2011 census and has been central to South Africa's gold mining industry, with a mixed migrant workforce reflected in its Sesotho name Matjhabeng, meaning where nations meet.
