Worcester, South Africa

Worcester is a town in the Western Cape province of South Africa, about 120 kilometers northeast of Cape Town on the N1 highway, serving as the administrative capital of the Breede Valley Local Municipality. It was formally established on 28 February 1820 and named by the Cape governor Lord Charles Somerset after his eldest brother, the Marquis of Worcester. A 2020 estimate recorded a population of 127,597 across 73.2 square kilometers, and the arrival of the Cape Town to Beaufort West railway line, whose station opened in 1876, accelerated the town's commercial growth. The surrounding Breede River Valley is the largest wine producing region in South Africa, contributing close to a quarter of the country's wine output, while the neighboring Hex River Valley produces more than seventeen million cartons of table grapes annually.
