Yogyakarta is the capital city of the Special Region of Yogyakarta in south-central Java, Indonesia, and the only Indonesian city still ruled by a monarchy. Its city population was about 375,700 in mid-2023. Yogyakarta briefly served as Indonesia's capital from 1946 to 1948 during the independence struggle, and it remains a major center for classical Javanese arts such as batik and wayang puppetry, and for higher education as home to Gadjah Mada University.
