The Special Region of Yogyakarta is a province of Indonesia on the island of Java, granted special autonomous status in recognition of its role as a sultanate that supported Indonesian independence, and remains headed by the reigning Sultan of Yogyakarta as its governor. Its capital and largest city is Yogyakarta, a major center of Javanese art, culture and education.
