Zagazig

Zagazig is a city in Egypt's eastern Nile Delta and the capital of Sharqia Governorate, with a population of about 380,000 as of 2024. Founded in 1830 on the site of an earlier village and named for the Zaqzuq family, it functions as a hub of the regional corn and cotton trade. The city hosts Zagazig University, established in 1974 and one of the largest universities in Egypt, and its Museum of Tal Basta Antiquities displays finds from the nearby ruins of ancient Bubastis, ancient Egypt's capital during the 22nd and 23rd Dynasties and seat of the cult of the goddess Bastet.
