Zaria, formerly known as Zazzau, is a metropolitan city in Kaduna State, Nigeria, serving as capital of the Zazzau Emirate Council and counted among the seven original Hausa city-states. A historic center of Islamic scholarship, craft production and trade in northern Nigeria, Zaria is today also home to Ahmadu Bello University, one of the largest universities in Africa, which has made the city an important educational center.
