Ziguinchor is the capital of Ziguinchor Region and the chief town of the Casamance area of Senegal, at the mouth of the Casamance River, and is Senegal's eighth largest city with a population of 215,998 at the 2023 census. Nearly cut off from northern Senegal by the Gambia, it was a Portuguese trading post from 1645 to 1888 and today serves as a cargo port and transport hub.
