Zinder is Niger's third-largest city, in the country's southeast about 861 kilometers from the capital Niamey, with a population of 235,605 at the 2012 census, up from around 50,000 in 1977. Kanuri aristocrats made it the capital of the Sultanate of Damagaram in 1736, and it became a major stop on trans-Saharan trade routes linking North Africa to markets in Kano and eastward to Bornu. Its economy today rests on agriculture and industry, including leather tanning and the SORAZ refinery, commissioned in 2011 as Niger's first oil refinery.
