Zurich is the largest city in Switzerland and the capital of the canton of Zurich, in north-central Switzerland at the northwestern tip of Lake Zurich. As of the end of 2024 the municipality had a population of 436,551, the urban area 1.45 million (2020), and the metropolitan area 2.1 million (2020). It is one of Switzerland's primary financial centres, home to many financial institutions and banking companies. Permanently settled for over 2,000 years, it was eventually founded by the Romans, who called it Turicum; the earliest written record dates from the 2nd century, a tombstone referring to it as the Statio Turicensis Quadragesima Galliarum. Switzerland does not yet have its own entity on this atlas and is recorded as an open entity request.
