Guinea-Bissau is a country on the Atlantic coast of West Africa, bordered by Senegal to the north and Guinea to the southeast, with low coastal plains and mangroves rising to a forest-savanna mosaic inland and the Bijagos Archipelago of eighty-eight islands off its coast. It unilaterally declared independence from Portugal on 24 September 1973, formally recognized on 10 September 1974. It is a unitary semi-presidential republic. Its capital is Bissau.
