Madagascar, officially the Republic of Madagascar, is an island country in the Indian Ocean off the southeastern coast of Africa, comprising the island of Madagascar and numerous smaller peripheral islands. It is the world's fourth-largest island and the second-largest island country. Madagascar gained independence from France on 26 June 1960. Its capital is Antananarivo.
