The Marshall Islands is an archipelagic country in the Micronesia region of Oceania, lying west of the International Date Line and north of the equator in the northwestern Pacific Ocean. It became fully sovereign under a Compact of Free Association with the United States, effective 21 October 1986. Its capital is Majuro.
