Mauritius is an island country in the Indian Ocean about 2,000 kilometers off the southeastern coast of Africa, east of Madagascar, comprising the main island together with Rodrigues, Agalega and St Brandon. It gained independence from the United Kingdom on 12 March 1968 and became a republic on 12 March 1992. It is a parliamentary republic. Its capital is Port Louis.
