Northern Cyprus, officially the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, is a de facto state occupying the northern third of the island of Cyprus, recognised internationally only by Turkey; the rest of the world regards the territory as part of the Republic of Cyprus under Turkish military occupation. It unilaterally declared independence in November 1983, nine years after a 1974 Turkish military intervention divided the island in response to a Greek Cypriot coup attempt aimed at union with Greece. Its de facto capital is North Nicosia, the northern half of the island's divided capital city, and it operates as a semi-presidential republic that remains heavily dependent on Turkish financial and military support amid an international embargo.
