The Ptolemaic Kingdom, or Ptolemaic Empire, was an ancient Greek polity based in Egypt during the Hellenistic period. The Macedonian Greek general Ptolemy I Soter, a companion of Alexander the Great, founded it in 305 BC, and the Ptolemaic dynasty ruled until the death of Cleopatra VII in 30 BC. Its capital Alexandria, a Greek city founded by Alexander, became a major centre of Greek culture, learning and trade for the next three centuries. The Ptolemies were the longest and last dynasty of ancient Egypt and brought a distinct era of religious and cultural syncretism between the Greek and Egyptian civilizations.
