The Union of South Africa was a British Dominion and later a Commonwealth realm in southern Africa from 1910 to 1961, and the historical predecessor of the present Republic of South Africa. It came into existence on 31 May 1910 with the unification of the Cape, Natal, Transvaal and Orange River colonies, taking in the territories of the former South African Republic and Orange Free State. After World War I it signed the Treaty of Versailles, became a founding member of the League of Nations and was given the mandate to administer South West Africa. Its capitals were Cape Town, Pretoria and Bloemfontein, and it became a republic in 1961.
