The collapse or gradual subsidence of ground surface into an underlying void created by the dissolution of soluble bedrock, producing a depression that can appear suddenly and catastrophically or develop slowly over years. It is a defining surface expression of karst landscapes and poses a recognized hazard to buildings and infrastructure built above soluble rock.
