The isolation of a steep-sided residual hill or mountain standing abruptly above a much lower surrounding plain, left behind as the softer or more deeply weathered rock around it is stripped away over long periods of erosion in tropical and subtropical climates. Uluru in central Australia is among the most recognized examples of the landform this process produces.
