Floodplain Formation

Geomorphology

The buildup of a flat valley floor bordering a river channel as repeated overbank floods deposit fine sediment across the surrounding land. Floodplains grow through lateral channel migration and vertical sediment accretion together, and their fertile deposits have long made them centers of settlement and agriculture.
