A volcanic eruption in which lava emerges along a linear crack in the crust rather than from a single central vent, often producing a curtain of fire as magma erupts simultaneously along the fissure's length. Iceland, sitting astride the diverging Mid-Atlantic Ridge, is especially prone to fissure eruptions such as the 2014-2015 Holuhraun event.
