The generation, movement and eventual solidification of molten rock, or magma, within the Earth's crust and upper mantle. Magmatism ranges from the slow crystallization of magma at depth into intrusive igneous rock to its eruption at the surface as lava, and drives both mountain building and volcanic activity.
