The physical disintegration of rock into smaller fragments without changing its chemical composition, driven by freeze-thaw cycling, thermal expansion and contraction, salt crystal growth, and the pressure release of exhumed rock. It is the dominant weathering mode in cold and arid climates where chemical reactions proceed slowly.
