The Anatolian Plateau occupies most of Turkey's surface area, with elevations ranging from about 600 meters in the west to 1,200 meters further inland, and reaching its highest point at Mount Erciyes near Kayseri at 3,917 meters. Ankara, Turkey's capital, sits in the plateau's northwestern part.
