A waterfall, or a closely spaced series of small waterfalls, in which water descends over a sequence of rock steps or ledges rather than in a single sheer drop. Cascades typically form where a streambed crosses a stack of alternating hard and soft rock layers, each contributing its own small drop to the overall descent.
