A large and powerful waterfall, or a series of steep rapids in a river's course, generally used to describe a fall of especially great volume or force rather than a distinct landform type of its own. The Nile's six historic cataracts, a series of rocky, turbulent stretches rather than sheer drops, are the term's best-known application.
