Copper Canyon is a system of six distinct canyons in the Sierra Madre Occidental, in the southwestern part of Chihuahua state in northwestern Mexico, covering an area of about 65,000 square kilometers. The canyons were cut by six rivers draining the western side of the Sierra Tarahumara, all of which merge into the Rio Fuerte before emptying into the Gulf of California, and the canyon walls take their name from their copper-green color.
