A landscape dominated by grasses and other herbaceous vegetation, with few or no trees, typically occurring in climates too dry to support extensive forest but not so arid that they become desert. Grasslands develop where periodic fire, grazing pressure or moderate rainfall favor grasses over the slower-establishing trees that might otherwise take hold.
