A mixed landscape of open grassland interspersed with widely spaced trees or small groves, typical of tropical and subtropical regions with a pronounced wet and dry season. Savannas cover roughly a fifth of the Earth's land surface and are especially extensive across sub-Saharan Africa, where seasonal rainfall and periodic fire together prevent the tree cover from closing into full forest.
