A narrow strip of land, bordered by water on both sides, that connects two larger landmasses together, often forming a critical land bridge between them. The Isthmus of Panama, connecting North and South America, is the type example most often cited, and its narrowness has made isthmuses attractive sites for canals linking the seas on either side.
