A temperate grassland landscape, historically dominated by tall and mixed grasses rather than trees, typical of the interior plains of North America where rainfall is sufficient to support grass but generally too variable or fire-prone to sustain forest. Much of the original prairie has since been converted to agriculture, making it one of the most heavily altered landform types in North America.
