The Andes is the mountain range running roughly 7,000 kilometers down the western edge of South America, from Venezuela and Colombia in the north through Peru, Bolivia, and Chile to Patagonia in the south, the longest continental mountain range on Earth. Formed by the subduction of the Nazca and Antarctic plates beneath the South American plate, it holds the hemisphere's highest peak, Aconcagua, and a chain of active volcanoes running much of its length.

The convergence may take the form of subduction (where a continent rides forcefully over an oceanic plate to form a noncollisional orogen) or continental collision (convergence of two or more continents to form a collisional orogeny).
