Peru is a megadiverse country on the Pacific coast of South America, with habitats ranging from the arid plains of its coastal region in the west, through the peaks of the Andes running from its north to its southeast, to the tropical Amazon basin rainforest in the east. It declared independence from Spain on 28 July 1821, becoming the Republic of Peru. Its capital and largest city is Lima.
