Ecuador, officially the Republic of Ecuador, is a country in northwestern South America, bordered by Colombia on the north, Peru on the east and south, and the Pacific Ocean on the west. Guayaquil became the first territory in present-day Ecuador to gain independence from Spain on 9 October 1820, and Ecuador became a fully independent republic, separate from Gran Colombia, in 1830. Its capital is Quito.
