Galapagos National Park is Ecuador's first national park, established in 1959 to protect ninety-seven percent of the land area of the Galapagos Islands, though the park did not begin active operation until 1968. The park protects the archipelago's uniquely isolated flora and fauna, including the giant Galapagos tortoise, marine iguanas and Darwin's finches, whose variation across the islands helped inspire Charles Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection. It is administered by the Galapagos National Park Service under a Superintendent and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
