Amboseli National Park is a national park in Loitoktok District in Kajiado County, Kenya, formerly known as Maasai Amboseli Game Reserve, covering a core area of about 392 square kilometres within a much larger 8,000 square kilometre ecosystem that spans the Kenya-Tanzania border in the shadow of Mount Kilimanjaro. The park is home to around 400 recorded bird species, including pelicans, kingfishers, crakes and hamerkop among 47 species of raptor, and it remains closely tied to the Maasai people who live throughout the surrounding ecosystem. It is one of Kenya's most visited parks, drawing visitors especially for close encounters with its free-ranging elephant herds against the backdrop of Kilimanjaro.
