Kenya is a country in East Africa, bordered clockwise by South Sudan to the northwest, Ethiopia to the north, Somalia to the east, the Indian Ocean to the southeast, Tanzania to the southwest, and Lake Victoria and Uganda to the west. Its territory runs along the Great Rift Valley, the trench marking the slow splitting of the African tectonic plate. The Colony and Protectorate of Kenya came to an end on 12 December 1963, when independence was conferred on the Republic of Kenya, ending British colonial rule. Its capital and largest city is Nairobi.
