Masai Mara National Reserve, sometimes spelled Maasai Mara and known locally simply as the Mara, is a national game reserve in Narok County, Kenya, contiguous with Serengeti National Park across the border in Tanzania. First set aside as a wildlife sanctuary in 1961 and granted full national reserve status in 1974, the reserve takes its name from the Maasai people who have long inhabited the region, with "Mara" meaning "spotted" in the Maa language for the scattered bushy trees across its landscape. It forms the northern stage of the annual wildebeest and zebra migration shared with the Serengeti, one of the largest large-mammal migrations remaining on Earth.
