Amboseli National Park

National Park

Amboseli National Park is a national park in Loitoktok District in Kajiado County, Kenya, formerly known as Maasai Amboseli Game Reserve, covering a core area of about 392 square kilometres within a much larger 8,000 square kilometre ecosystem that spans the Kenya-Tanzania border in the shadow of Mount Kilimanjaro. The park is home to around 400 recorded bird species, including pelicans, kingfishers, crakes and hamerkop among 47 species of raptor, and it remains closely tied to the Maasai people who live throughout the surrounding ecosystem. It is one of Kenya's most visited parks, drawing visitors especially for close encounters with its free-ranging elephant herds against the backdrop of Kilimanjaro.

FAQs

Is Amboseli also a UNESCO biosphere reserve?

Yes. UNESCO recognizes Amboseli as a biosphere reserve at the foot of Kilimanjaro with several ecological zones.

Yes. UNESCO lists an Amboseli Biosphere Reserve in southern Kenya, and the park carries that international designation. UNESCO describes the reserve as lying at the foot of Kilimanjaro on the Kenyan side of the border and containing a variety of ecological zones, including natural dry mountain forest, mountains, savannah rangelands, wetlands and swamps. A biosphere reserve is broader than a national park in purpose, because it also looks at how the people living around it can use the land sustainably.
