Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is a national park in southwestern Uganda, established in 1991 from a pair of earlier forest reserves, protecting one of the largest remaining stands of Afromontane forest in East Africa. The park is best known as a stronghold of the endangered mountain gorilla, sheltering roughly half of the world's remaining population, and it draws researchers and tourists for closely regulated gorilla trekking that funds much of its conservation work. It was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994 for its exceptional biodiversity, and it is managed by the Uganda Wildlife Authority.

What makes Bwindi a biodiversity hotspot beyond its gorillas?
Possibly the most tree species for its altitude in East Africa.
UNESCO describes the forest as believed to be a Pleistocene refugium, a place where forest life survived through earlier climate change. It says the park has possibly the greatest number of tree species for its altitude in East Africa, and that it hosts endemic butterflies and one of the richest mammal communities in Africa.
