Uganda, officially the Republic of Uganda, is a landlocked country in East Africa. It is bordered to the east by Kenya, to the north by South Sudan, to the west by the Democratic Republic of the Congo, to the southwest by Rwanda, and to the south by Tanzania. Uganda gained independence from the United Kingdom on 9 October 1962, with Queen Elizabeth II retained as head of state. Its capital is Kampala. What happened to the Buganda kingdom after Uganda became independent?

Buganda was abolished in 1967 and restored in 1993.

When Uganda became independent in 1962, the Buganda kingdom was given considerable autonomy and special federal status within the new nation. Tensions with the central government grew, and in 1967 Prime Minister Milton Obote abolished Buganda and the country's three other traditional kingdoms. The Buganda kingdom was not restored until 1993.
