Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is a national park in southwestern Uganda, established in 1991 from a pair of earlier forest reserves, protecting one of the largest remaining stands of Afromontane forest in East Africa. The park is best known as a stronghold of the endangered mountain gorilla, sheltering roughly half of the world's remaining population, and it draws researchers and tourists for closely regulated gorilla trekking that funds much of its conservation work. It was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994 for its exceptional biodiversity, and it is managed by the Uganda Wildlife Authority.
