Kakadu National Park is a protected area in the Northern Territory of Australia, roughly 171 kilometres southeast of Darwin, proclaimed in stages between 1979 and 1991 to reach its present extent. It spans an exceptional range of ecosystems, from wetlands and floodplains to sandstone escarpment and monsoon forest, and it holds one of the largest concentrations of ancient rock art sites in the world, some dating back tens of thousands of years. The park is jointly managed by its Aboriginal traditional owners and the Australian government's Director of National Parks, and it was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for both natural and cultural values, first in 1981 with extensions in 1987 and 1992.
