Puebla, formally Heroica Puebla de Zaragoza and long known simply as Puebla, is the capital and largest city of the Mexican state of Puebla, seat of the Puebla Municipality in east-central Mexico. Founded by Spanish colonists in the sixteenth century on a site with no prior indigenous settlement, Puebla is renowned for its colonial architecture, its Talavera pottery, and as the birthplace of the mole poblano sauce and the site of the 1862 Battle of Puebla commemorated on Cinco de Mayo.

The city was founded in 1531 in an area called Cuetlaxcoapan, which means "where serpents change their skin", between two of the main indigenous settlements at the time, Tlaxcala and Cholula.
