Puebla, officially the Free and Sovereign State of Puebla, is one of the thirty-two federal entities of Mexico, located in the east-central part of the country and divided into 217 municipalities, with Puebla City as its capital. It grew out of the colonial province built around the city, which the Spanish founded in 1531 to secure the trade route between Mexico City and the port of Veracruz, and today it is one of Mexico's most industrialized states, though its development remains concentrated around its urban centers.
