Mount Everest is Earth's highest mountain above sea level, on the crest of the Great Himalayas of southern Asia, lying on the border between Nepal and the Tibet Autonomous Region of China. In 2020, China and Nepal jointly declared its elevation to be 8,848.86 metres (29,031.69 feet), a figure now widely accepted, superseding the long-standard 1955 Survey of India measurement. New Zealander Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay made the first confirmed ascent in 1953; the Japanese climber Tabei Junko became the first woman to summit in 1975, and Reinhold Messner completed the first solo ascent, without supplemental oxygen, in 1980. As of 2017, more than 7,600 people had reached the summit and nearly 300 had died attempting it.
