Sagarmatha National Park

Sagarmatha National Park is a national park in the Khumbu region of northeastern Nepal, established in 1976 to protect the area surrounding Sagarmatha, the Nepali name for Mount Everest, the highest mountain on Earth. The park's terrain rises from forested lower valleys to alpine scrub and permanent snow and ice at its highest elevations, and it is home to the Sherpa people, whose villages, monasteries and mountaineering culture are woven into the protected landscape alongside wildlife such as the snow leopard and Himalayan tahr. It was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979 and is managed by Nepal's Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation.
